What Skip or Ship actually does

Most feedback on a business idea is either polite or arbitrary. Skip or Ship is neither. It runs your idea through the same ten weighted checks every time and returns a verdict you can act on — including when that verdict is that the idea is not worth building.

How the verdict is produced

  1. 1

    You describe the idea

One paragraph is enough. The more precisely you name the buyer, the pain and how you would reach them, the more accurate the scoring — vagueness is itself penalised.

  2. 2

    Ten categories are scored

Each dimension is scored 0–100 against a fixed rubric, not a freeform opinion. Real Pain carries the most weight because buyers only change behaviour for problems that genuinely hurt.

  3. 3

    The weights are applied server-side

Scores are combined using fixed weights in code rather than left to the model, which is what keeps the same idea from drifting between runs.

  4. 4

You get a decision, not a summary

Ship, Fix or Skip — with the per-category breakdown showing exactly which signals pulled the number up or down, so you know what to change.

The ten categories, and what each is worth

Every idea is scored on all ten. The weight column is the share each category contributes to the final score out of 100.

CategoryWeightWhat it asks
Real Pain20%Does this solve an expensive, obvious, recurring problem?
Market Demand15%Would a real market care enough to look for this now?
Defensibility15%Can the idea resist fast copycats or commodity pressure?
Competition Saturation10%How favorable is the competitive space for a new entrant?
Clarity10%Is the customer, problem, and promise clear in one pass?
Monetisation Potential10%Is there a believable path to getting paid?
Distribution Potential10%Can this get customers without heroic spend or luck?
Execution Difficulty5%How manageable is the build and operating complexity?
Speed to MVP3%How quickly can a credible first version ship?
Name Strength2%Is the current name credible, ownable, and usable?

What the verdict means

Ship80–100
Strong enough to justify building. Move, but keep validating with real buyers.
Fix55–79
A real opportunity with a specific weakness. Iterate on the lowest categories before committing.
Skip0–54
The problems are structural. Better to learn that now than after six months of building.

Common questions

Will it just tell me my idea is good?

No. The evaluator is tuned to challenge assumptions, penalise crowded markets and punish weak differentiation. A large share of ideas score Fix or Skip, and that is the point — finding out before you build is the cheapest possible failure.

Does the same idea always get the same score?

Yes. The category weights are applied in code after the evaluation, so the verdict is reproducible. That is what makes iterating meaningful: if your score moves, it moved because the idea changed.

What does it cost?

The verdict, the per-category breakdown and the brutal analysis are free with no signup. Paid reports add real-world signal checks — search demand, competition density, and domain, handle and trademark availability.

What should I do with a Fix verdict?

Read the lowest-scoring categories first. Fix usually means the underlying opportunity is real but one specific thing — usually differentiation, distribution or pricing — is not yet credible. Sharpen that, then re-run.
